Clicking In

Every now and then some particular inspiration seems to slam me up the side of the head.  Consequently, the Friday morning class lecture was particularly profound from a motivational slash logical sort of way, I suppose.

I don't really try to be a motivational type of speaker, but it seems to be what comes out of my mouth.  Like I said, my mouth runs faster than my brain most of the time.  Nevertheless, a few of the students from time to time express their gratitude for some the verbage that I proliferate.  For that, I'm grateful as well.

It's always good to hear some joyful praise from you guys in the audience.  I know most of you are only concerned with getting out of school and doing whatever comes next.  I was the same way when I was your age.

Thanks for all the good words and keep the comments coming.

Next on the agenda for class is the real hot stuff for real future managers.

Okay...Too Few Students Want to Read

OKAY!

I see that too few of the Chinese students want to take the time to read much English.

Fine!

I'll just put short things on this site for you.

If you want more, let me know.  So far, the feedback hasn't been good for longer lessons online.

Vocab Test and Downsizing of Businesses

Hey, Management Class!  Welcome back.

Today's list is easy.  It's at the end of this bonus story.

Before we start on the list, I want to give you a big bunch of bonus stuff to make more points.  Read it and you'll learn a lot about an amazing character who's a pretty cool dude.  He's called a Change Agent.

Of course, we introduced him in class, but now I want to tell you what this dude can really do.  It's pretty amazing!

If you like destroying stuff, you'll like the Change Agent.  He hangs around businesses that give him a lot of money to destroy their organizational structure and helps the company rebuild it.

Sounds crazy, huh?

You got that right!

Here's how he does it:

Step 1.  First, a company hires this guy, who's called a Consultant.  We're going to call him Clint the Change Agent (after Clint Eastwood, of course).  He sits down with the management and discusses the problems that the management is all ticked off about.  Ticked off means they're angry about something.  They ask Clint what he would do to solve their problems.

Clint looks at the list of stuff and sits and gives a serious look of professionalism.  Then, after a while, he sighs and speaks.  The room is quiet and every manager is listening.

"We need to come up with new goals for the company, "says Clint.  The managers all nod their heads in agreement.

"But, what kind of goals?" asked the CEO, named George.

"Well, that's up to you, George.  You and the other managers come up with a new set of plans and I'll help you implement them."

All the managers smiled and thanked Clint, and they went off to the KTV for fun.

Step 2.  George and other managers decided they need more information before they could possibly come up with new goals.

"I understand what you mean," said Clint.  "Most companies start off the same way.  I'll get all the information for you with my special program, called Clint's 007 Method.  Here's how it works:

"First, I'll get all the documents you need, like Job Descriptions, Personnel records from HR and Budget stuff from Accounting.  Then, I'll round up all the processes that everyone in the company does by interviewing everyone important.  After I make a few calculations, I'll bring all of it back here and show you all about your own company.  Then, you'll understand how to make new goals.  Okay?"

The managers and George were all very happy they hired Clint.  He was a major cool dude and he looked just like 007.

It took several weeks to accomplish everything, but soon, Clint had all of the information and everyone was fairly cooperative in the company, though many of them were very scared they were going to lose their jobs after Clint found out the truth about them.  Clint told them not to worry.

Eventually, George and the guys were able to come up with some new goals that were able to make more money for the company.  Unfortunately, Clint showed them where many areas of the company were redundant and duplicated.  They would have to lay off many employees, possibly around 150 of them.  On the other hand, this would save the company a lot of money, since some of these employees are managers.

Step 3.  Finally, all the plans were made and put into action.  New processes were put into place, the entire company was re-organized including a new organizational chart that showed a few new managers and a few less managers.  Everyone in the company was asked to help with the reorganization and Clint even helped with the communications to tell everyone why the company was going through all of the changes.

In the end, the results were good.  Now, George asked Clint to hang around some more and help them evaluate the new organization for any mistakes they might have made.  Clint was very happy to do so, especially since he was getting a lot of money from this company.  He hoped he could continue to make even more in the future.  By the way, his girlfriend loved him more, too.

On the last day, Clint said good-bye to his new friends, got in his new Porsche 911, put the top down, and turned on the sound system with Infinity speakers.  He looked up at George and the guys and said, "I'm going to miss you guys."  A tear rolled down his cheek.  "But, hey!  I'll see you at the sports bar tonight, dudes!"

With that, he spun his tires and sped down Corporate Street as the guys watched him disappear around the bend.

"There goes a great man, and a really cool dude," said George.  Everyone watched as the Porsche faded out of view.

Now, here's the list:

1.  Change Agent
2.  Time Lag
3.  Downsizing
4.  Consultant
5.  Organizational Development (OD)
6.  Outworking
7.  Outsourcing
8.  De-layering
9.  Internal Environment
10.  External Environment
11.  PEST
12.  Feedback
13.  Feed Forward
14.  Process of Control
15.  Process
16.  System
